SNOWS OF MARS

This view, released Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, of the planet's North Pole, is based on extremely precise observations from two features on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, which uses precise measurements from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on the spacecraft to generate a 3-D "true color" mosaic topography view. The color for the mosaic was provided by the spacecraft's Mars Orbiter Camera. Vast fields of carbon dioxide ice are eroding around the poles of Mars, suggesting that the Red Planet's climate is warming and the atmosphere becoming slightly more dense. Experts say that over hundreds of years the warming changes could allow liquid water to return to the Martian surface (AP Photo/NASA)
